News Jay Nutting Awarded Prestigious Eisenhower Fellowship to Study International Energy and Agriculture Issues

PORTLAND, ME (October 20, 2009) - Verrill Dana and Maine Street Solutions are pleased to announce that John (Jay) Nutting, Governmental Affairs Consultant and the 2009 recipient of the Eisenhower Fellowship in the area of Agriculture, has begun his voyage to India. This prestigious award is given annually to one person in the United States to study energy and agricultural issues around the globe.

“It is a very exciting time in the world for both energy and agricultural issues,” says Nutting.  “With so many changes afoot, I’m looking forward to exploring the ways in which other countries will be address energy and food sustainability.”

Jay received this honor in February of 2009, and has recently begun a 5 week trip to India and the European Commission where he is currently engaging in professional meetings with farmers and farm organizations, national government officials, university researchers, and policy experts in the field of agricultural energy use and food policy.

“Specifically,” Jay says, “I am interested in learning more about what EU governments will be doing to assist dairy farmers with low dairy prices, an issue that is also at the forefront for dairy farmers in the States.” In addition, he says, “I hope to learn more about the biofuel policies in the EU and India, and what public policy considerations are being made regarding the use of food crops for energy purposes. This is particularly relevant to the State of Maine, as it has a great deal of potential to produce biofuel from non-food sources.”

Jay is documenting his travels with a personal blog, which is available to readers by visiting jayefellowship.blogspot.com/. He has been updating the blog as much as his schedule permits, with both pictures and written accounts of his professional and personal experiences abroad.

Jay will return on November 9, 2009, when he’ll provide a full account of his experience and will be available for interviews. For more information about Jay’s qualifications to receive this award, please read the press release at www.verrilldana.com/NewsItem.aspx?Id=106.
